Wen Chean's Reflections
As the semester is drawing closer to an end, I realized that I have gained a lot from this module. Being a Chinese who is not fluent in Chinese Language, this module definitely provided me insights to this language and helped me in different ways. Although I cannot really say for sure that I am proficient in Mandarin now, at least I could string a few words and make simple but understandable sentences.
I really enjoyed this module because it is a much needed break from my core modules despite the heavy workload (countless tutorial exercises, quizzes and tests) that I had to endure. The tutorial exercises were really helpful because they ensured that I revised each chapter every week. They also allowed me to practice writing the Chinese characters correctly which is really important in order for me to remember how to write the characters.

This Chinese project added more fun in learning this module. It was a pleasure to work with my fellow group mates. We did endure a few difficulties at first such as setting a meeting time when everyone is free (since we are from different courses), churning out ideas for the interview and finding out the meanings of the new words. But we managed to combine our heads and pull it through together in the end. The part that I enjoyed the most during this whole stint is shooting the video. Laughter echoed around us the whole time! I had also a great time getting to know our interviewee, Lei Lei. I learnt a lot about her and she was very eager to answer all of our questions. She is a soft-spoken person, hence listening to her speaking in Chinese makes the language sound beautiful and polite.
I am grateful that I decided to take this module. I have made many new friends and we enjoy conversing in Chinese together eventhough our pronunciations may be wrong or inaccurate. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Zhang laoshi who very patiently taught us about this language throughout the whole semester.
What is left is to enjoy my time learning Chinese while it lasts! :)

OMG! I can type in Chinese!!!! :D Okay, that aside, just wanted to say, LAC1201 has been one interesting module. By interesting, I mean, the lectures are fun, the tutorials are funny, much unlike my core modules which are pretty dry ): The lecturers and tutors are 'animated', yes Zhang laoshi, you too, not only Xu xiansheng :P
Anyway, being a Malaysian Chinese who only speaks Malay and English, it's kind of sad to say I don't even know my own mother tongue. But after taking this module, I can finally understand simple Chinese. And, of course, place a decent order without sounding like an idiot. And I just love calligraphy. I used to just admire their beauty but now when I see them and am able to recognize some words/characters, I feel really proud.
I've really made many new friends from this module, so many people from different races and countries. It's nice to exchange experiences with one another. Also, classes are small so interaction is actually possible.
But I think the best would be the project. Doing the interview project helped me understand and get to know my friend Lei Lei better. Sure we shared some talks but I realized I never really knew much about her personally until now. Also, working with my group members has been great! The planning of the script was hillarious. And it was really nice of them to travel all the way to UCC at night just because I was working and could only discuss between shifts. We realized how crazy and full of ideas we were till we managed to turn a mere interview into a drama XD
The shooting made me realize that it is not easy to make a movie! Now I know what directors and actors feel. Take after take after take after take. But the bloopers were just hilarious and in the end we all had a great time and enjoyed ourselves. Not to mention I learnt that vending machines are an absolute no during shootings. Too much white noise :P
But all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this module despite the constant quiz/test/homework. The benefits far outweigh the stress and I'm really glad I took this module. I will most probably miss the class at the end of the semester, but it was a great journey nonetheless (:

Iswadi's Reflections
Learning Chinese is NOT easy. First lesson was awesome. A few simple words and phrases to memorise. From then on, it gets tougher each and every lesson. When Lesson 8 came, my jaws dropped. Sentences got more complicated and the number of words and characters to, not only memorise, but know how to write was more than double as compare to the Lesson 1. I'm not sure if I can survive the upcoming quizzes and tests.
Talking about quizzes and tests, its like every other week! On top of that, the exercises do take a lot of time to complete. Or maybe its just me. That is not all. There is still a project to be done. I did expect the workload to be heavy but not as heavy as this. What did I get myself into?
I got myself two interesting teachers, many new friends and lots of fun! Yes, it had not been smooth sailing learning this new language but the journey so far has been enriching nonetheless. The lecturer and tutor did the best they could to make lessons fun and enjoyable and their hard work is paying off. The time-consuming exercises do help me memorise the characters and words better and the quizzez and tests kept me on my toes.
Other students in the class have been very engaging and fun to interact with. As for the project, it was a chance to put what we have learned to practice. And practice we did in front of a native Chinese. The process of completing the project has been another learning curve for me.
There is always the good and bad to everything and learning a new language is no different. At the end of the day, it is what you take from it that matters. The journey is as important as the destination. I hope to be able to speak Chinese but I have also learn a lot from the process of achieving that.
Thank you to both my teachers for imparting their knowledge, my group mates for accepting me into the group and creating an awesome project and Ms Lei Lei for being such a great sport.

Learning Chinese is awesome! I finally get to read and write Chinese words. The first few Chinese lessons of the first few starting weeks gave me the impression that this is going to be easy. Starting from the fourth week, I am already kind of blur. After the recess weak, I was devastated. The number of words and especially the pinyin! They really drive me crazy. Mugging and mugging for each and every QUIZ and TEST! Not to mention the homework.

This semester would really be kind of dull if it’s not for this Chinese Language module. It keeps the life in me throughout the semester. It keeps me away from my tones of never-ending readings. What else is more interesting than making a video right after the mid-terms? What never stops interest me from this module are the interesting videos shown in class; including the NURSERY rhymes!
Throughout this module, I have two really great teachers whom I would like to give all my thanks to them for making the class not only interactive but also very interesting. Despite the fact that my tutorial is as early as 8am itself, the lessons related indeed spark me to force my eyelid not to close.
I really enjoyed this module compare to most of my other core modules. Despite all the test, quiz, homework and projects, this is one cool subject. I would definitely proceed to the next level! LAC2201, I will be there! Seeyaa!
